Hot Dog! It's Halloween!

Happy Halloween! This is the third day in a row that the Minnie Mice are dressed up. A&Z are getting lots of wear out of their costumes before they get demoted to the dress up bin.

We had so much fun tonight trick-or-treating around our neighborhood with our good friends P&K and just as much fun treating all the kids that came to our house. Our new neighborhood is great for Halloween. Most of the neighbors really get into decorating and lots handed out full size candy bars. We have to step up our game next year! We were cleaned out of candy early and gave out most of A&Z's candy too :) They had a couple pieces tonight and that will probably be it. I might as well get away with it now because they will surely account for it all next year!

Halloween is one of those holidays that is a million times more fun with kids. It was fun dressing the girls up the last couple years, but this is the first year that they were really excited about all of it - dressing up, trick or treating to the neighbors, giving candy out.

Carving Pumpkins

Thanks to Pinterest, I knew exactly what to carve in the pumpkins we picked up at the pumpkin patch. Months ago, I pinned a website that has Disney printable carving templates. A&Z love all things Mickey Mouse (and supporting cast) related. Both girls are dressing up as Minnie for Halloween so we carved Mickey and Goofy into our pumpkins to coordinate. Ok, seriously, I am not usually this organized, but it was easy to print out and carve. I carved Mickey (with Lexi "helping") and Mu carved Goofy (with "Zara" helping).

We did end up turning on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and breaking out the popcorn so we could buy some alone time to finish the detailed work.

Maryam's Baby Shower

I was thrilled to host a baby shower for my beautiful friend Maryam last weekend. We had a great time showering her with gifts and laughs and I cannot wait to meet her new baby girl when she arrives in December. What an adorable baby belly!

Sugar and Spice Cookies

My favorite fall cookies are these sugar and spice cookies I have been making for a few years now. I made them again last week for Maryam's baby shower (more on the baby shower here). The cookies are subtly sweet and full of fall spice. I found it from the awesome Good Things Catered blog that is now defunct so I'm posting it here for the record.

Sugar and Spice Cookies with Maple Glaze
adapted from my favorite cookies originally from Ashlee

Ingredients:

1 1/2 c. butter
1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/2 c. powdered sugar
4 eggs
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp almond extract
1 tsp orange zest
5 c. flour
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp salt
½ tsp ground nutmeg
½ tsp ground ginger
¼ tsp ground cloves
¼ tsp allspice
Powdered sugar, for rolling

Directions:

-Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
-Cream butter and sugars in a mixer for 5 minutes.
-Add eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly.
-Add vanilla, almond, and zest.
-Sift in flour, baking powder, spices and salt a little at a time.
-Do not over mix, this process should take about one minute.
-Chill dough for up to a week in the fridge, or roll out and cut right away.
-Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and bake cookies for 7-8 minutes (4 minutes for mini ones).
-Wait until cookies are cooled before icing.

Maple Glaze
(makes nearly enough for drizzling on a full batch of the sugar and spice cookies)

½ c butter
2 c sifted powdered sugar
2 tsp maple flavoring
2-4 T hot water

Directions:
-heat butter until golden brown; stir in powdered sugar and maple flavor; stir in 2-4 T hot water until smooth and the consistency you want
-if icing seizes/separates, use hand mixer to beat in the water or try hotter water
-pipe or drizzle on the cookies; cool overnight in single layer, then stack

Funnies

Recent Funnies - I have been writing these down over the last two months because these girls are getting to that age where they say the funniest things and I want to remember them.

Lexi (pulling her hair over her face): I'm hiding. Where's Lexi?
Me: You are so funny.
Lexi: I'm so funny. I'm a clown.

Zara (climbing behind the couch cushions): I'm suck, I'm suck in the couch. (stuck)

Lexi: Bebejan is on a airpane way up there (pointing to sky).
Zara: Not up there. In France.

Lexi: Everybody put on a headband, we are going to a party! (no party on the schedule)

We had a record-breaking dry month in September and not much rain through the summer so it had been a while since the girls saw rain until last week when it finally started raining. Driving in the car it suddenly started pouring and Zara told me, "It's ok Mama, Daddy is just washing the car."

Pumpkin Patch Shortcut

Last year we drove half an hour to check out the Roloff's pumpkin patch happenings, but this year we just rolled down the hill to Baggentos Farm in less than five minutes. Thankfully we were able to go last week before the summer switch turned off so we enjoyed a sunny and dry pumpkin patch. Lexi and Zara were really into it and "picked" about a hundred pumpkins. They are anxiously awaiting carving the pumpkins (soon) and Halloweenie so they can dress up in their Minnie Mouse costumes.

Sherwood Orchards

At the end of September we drove a few miles down the road and met up with good friends at Sherwood Orchards. We picked apples, the kids ate lots of apples (taking a bite out of each one), played in the dirt, whined, rode in the apple cart and whined some more. It was dirty fall fun!

We ended up with a huge bag of apples to take home. A few days later, M's parents gave us a HUGE box of plums for the tree in their backyard so I made this plum applesauce. It was so yummy and the house smelled great. The girls will eat themselves sick with plums if I let them. Then the house would not smell so great. Ha. Ha.

A, Z, K ( I swear my kids were having a good time)

I really love getting rid of kid clutter and I enjoy shopping this resale too.  Our extra bedroom is looking a little crazy right now.
